Founded in 1984 by the late Most Reverend Joseph A. Ferrario, the Augustine Educational Foundation was formed to help Hawaii Catholic Schools reach out to parents that wanted a quality Catholic education for their children. Without discrimination against ethnic background, race or religion, the Foundation has two purposes:

Scholarships
First, to provide scholarships for students attending a Hawaii Catholic School based on need.

Educational Grants
Second, to award grant money to educators within the Catholic school system in Hawaii for teacher curriculum development programs that will better the level of instruction to students.

It is this faith in students and instructors in Hawaii Catholic Schools that people become aware of and support the continued growth of the Augustine Educational Foundation.

Our History

Hawaii Catholic Schools history dates back to 1840 when King Kamehameha III enacted a law designed to launch education throughout the Hawaiian Island chain.  Today, 36 parish and private Catholic schools, preschool through high school, on Oahu, Maui, Hawaii and Kauai, serve over 11,000 students of various ethnic and religious backgrounds.  It is a system of schools that religiously, socially, racially and economically is one the most integrated educational systems in the world.  Because of generous contributions of services and dollars, Catholic education is made possible throughout our islands – without financial support from the State of Hawaii – saving Hawaii’s taxpayers $65 million dollars each year.

It is with a spirit to help poverty-level families who count on Hawaii Catholic Schools for their children’s education that the Augustine Educational Foundation was founded.  A modest $1.0 million from the sale of St. Augustine School in Waikiki was gifted to the Foundation by the Diocese of Honolulu.

Tuition costs at local Catholic schools have more than tripled since the foundation was established.  During this time, the Foundation distributed more than $5.3 million in tuition scholarships.  An average of 950 student applications is received each year, with about 50% receiving a scholarship.

In the 2007-08 school year, the AEF received a record 1011 student applications.   The Foundation distributed a record total $500,000 in tuition scholarships to 419 recipients.

Our Staff

It takes a team of very dedicated individuals to make the Augustine Educational Foundation work. Our staff manages the tuition programs and raises the funds to support distribution each year.

Intimate knowledge of the students we serve creates the opportunity for our donors to know the students and become more committed to the mission of the Foundation. Our familiarity with our donors creates opportunities for us to raise funds for all the programs we administer. This two way communication is the key to our success and the future of the AEF.

Our biggest challenge ahead is getting the word out to more of our potential donors about the work of our Foundation. This leads to our ability to raise funds fast enough to serve all in need.

Of course the staff has the complete support and encouragement of the Bishop of Honolulu, Larry Silva and the Vicar General, Marc R. Alexander.
